2024-10-20 “If Meant” by Hannah (born 2002)

It is Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1880 where I am now. On Friday night, Shay and I shifted back to 1880—that’s the Shay born 2001 and the me born in 2002. We are with Merritt-2000, Kent-1958, and Emma-1965 and the others who belong on this timeline.

I was sitting in the parlor more or less waiting on Merritt so that we could go to Will’s building site when Kent came down. Emma and I shared her room so that he and Shay could stay here, too. Shay took the guest room; Kent took the other Hannah’s room.

“Good morning… Did you shift?”

“Not yet.”

“It’s in the 40s… nice and cool. Let’s get some fresh air?”

I agreed and we departed, heading nowhere in particular. After about a block, Kent spoke up.

“You seem really comfortable with this version of Merritt and Emma. A little… cuddly…”

“Cuddly… I’m not sure about that!” I told him it was hard to not think of Merritt and Emma as if they are the versions I know back in my timeline.

“Yeah, Merritt said the same thing about you. He said it was hard to remember you were a different person.”

I nodded, and Kent went on. “But are you? I mean… like… how well do you know the Kent from 2024? I guess that’s Kent-1998.”

“Not really well at all. I guess we’ve only been together a few times. I guess I know this you better than I know that you…

Kent smiled. “Maybe you should get to know him better, then you can tell me if he and I feel like the same person, too.”

“That would be interesting. He seems really nice from the little I know.”

Kent nodded. “Maybe we are the same people… duplicates, you know.”

“Duplicates…” I let the idea sink in. “But with different memories…”

Kent spoke again after a short pause. “You know all this is mind twisting. It’s crazy.”

I nodded, and he went on. “Like… you and this Merritt… seem to get along like I’d think you and the Merritt you are dating do.”

“I suppose. I hope all that works out.”

“Well, if it’s meant to be, it will be… We never know about matters of the heart… And shifting between two versions of the man… makes it even crazier!”
