2025-01-09 “Can You Know?” by Emma (born 1861)

Well, I wasn’t ‘xpecting tonight to come off like it did. Tom had decided to run shows on Thursdays, too, now, an’ I gotta Translocation mission tomorrow, so I worked tonight.

Now, you prob’ly know, when there’s a Translocation mission, me, Merritt, Hannah, an’ Kent get all distracted an’ ever’thing sorta slows down.

After the show’s what I wanted to tell about.

A woman come up to me and said, “I caught your show tonight. It was very good.”

I’d seen her in the theater before and tol’ her.

“Well, I like the idea. Little vignettes of history. I’m right fond of the Gold Rush show… 1950… California…”

I nodded and she smiled and went on. “That was a little before you were born…”

I smiled again. “It was. You know about my birthday?”

She nodded. “I’m Rebecca Flint. I’m a big fan of yours. I’ve read all your Instagram posts.”

“Have you?”

She nodded. “I missed you last weekend when I was here. I saw in IG that you were… you know… Now… I was thinking.”

She motioned to a little bench in the lobby and we sat down, then she said, “Emma, can I ask you something?”

I didn’t say so, but asking if you can ask is actually asking. I knew what she really meant, so I nodded.

“Do you think The Agency knows what they are doing? I’m… concerned.”

“What do you mean?”

“It seems confusing. You shifted through time to a duplicate. Then you shifted back and did a little mission. Then more shifting… Then, all of a sudden, your memories started merging and now there’s no more shifting… just the missions… It seems like… The Agency didn’t know what they were doing to start with.”

Well we talked about that for a little while, but she just said the same thing in different words. And I had to agree a little.

Then she said, “If they were going to merge your memories, why did they have to shift you in the first place?”

By then, the security man wanted to close and since I have a mission coming up, I told her I didn’t have an answer but it was a good question. Now, you can be sure I’ll talk to the others about this.
