When Shay called earlier, it seemed like her telephone anxiety would get the best of her. She finally got out that she wanted to go skating at Rockefeller Center. Devon said it would be fun.
They skated a while, then took a break. It was then that Shay seemed to get nervous again.
“Remember yesterday I said there were two things, but we only talked about Columbia?”
Devon nodded and she went on. “I’ve said before how I am always so awkward… Well, this is going to be one of those times.”
Deven shook his head. “Shay, you don’t come off awkward, from what I’ve seen. You seem nervous on the phone, but I don’t see why you think you’re awkward.”
Shay smiled and said, “That’s what brings me to say what I want to say. Around you, I… feel like I’m almost normal. You make me feel at ease.”
Devon smiled. “I think you are normal. I think worrying so much about being awkward distracts you. I don’t see much I’d call awkward.”
Shay inched closer to him, smiling. “It's because of you. Devon… you put me at ease. I feel something around you. Much more than the time-shift bond. I know this will come off at least clumsy.”
Devon smiled more. “Okay…”
“I want to date you.” Shay said. “Plainly put, I’d like it if… you know… we did stuff like this together and talked and laughed.”
“Date me?”
“Yes. And if you don’t want to, please don’t tease me or anything… I mean… you’re not like that… sorry. Never mind. But… Yeah… Date me…”
“Shay… We come from…”
Shay held up her hand. “Don’t say different worlds… My world doesn’t suit me. You… You suit me. Just this… Do you like me?”
Devon nodded. “Yes… Yes I like you, but I’d never think… never had thought I had a chance with…”
“You like me… That's all… That’s all we need to start dating… or whatever comes before dating. That’s all we need to start, okay?”
Devon needed no time to formulate a reply. “Shay, you’re amazing and kind. Your soul is just as beautiful as your appearance. Any man would be crazy to say no. And I’m not crazy, so let’s see what happens.”
