Kent and Shay, having time-shifted back to 1880 from 2024 found themselves on a Friday morning in Memphis on their way to a grocery store called J.T. Fargason & Co. that was at 369 Front Street. They were supposed to ask the butcher if he had a half-dozen lamb chops and buy them.
Kent looked over at Shay as they walked. “I don’t understand why Will didn’t just have the Kent and Shay from this timeline do this.”
Shay shook her head. “For some reason, it doesn’t seem to work like that. Who said being shifted sort of gets us motivated?”
Kent laughed. “Okay, I said that… And it does…”
Shay smiled. “I hope the other Shay is okay. She’d have woken up alone in that dumb house my father bought.”
Kent nodded. “That her father built in 1870, if I recall.”
“Right… So maybe she won’t be too scared.”
They reached the grocery store and found the butcher. Kent asked about the lamb chops.
“Well, it’s a funny thing,” the butcher said. “On this day, I just happen to have some. How many?’
“Six,” Kent replied.
The butcher laughed. “That’s exactly how many I have.”
He wrapped them up and Shay and Kent bought them. They hung around the store a little while and nothing noteworthy happened, so they left.
As they headed back toward Merritt’s house, Kent remarked, “This couldn’t be about us having dinner together… This has to be… connected… to something…”
Shay nodded. “Like if we hadn’t bought them, they would have gone bad and someone would have gotten sick… Or anything… Jacob’s butterfly effect once more. We’ll never know how this was important.”
Kent laughed. “Well, let’s hope Devon or Emma knows how to cook them!”
Shay smiled and looked at Kent. “So you assume I don’t know how to cook lamb chops?”
Kent looked at her. “Do you?”
Shay shook her head. “No, not really… I just think it’s interesting you assumed I didn’t.”
“No offense…” Kent shrugged. “I sure don’t know how. I doubt Merritt or Hannah can, either.”
Shay smiled again. “Let’s hope Emma or Devon can, then!”
