2024-10-22 “Can’t Stay Away” for Kent (born 1998)

Kent parked his truck on the street, surprised to find a space on the same block as Tom’s apartments where his new time-traveler friends lived. He grabbed the bag off the seat, smiled, and headed for the door. He pushed the buzzer and waited for someone to unlock the door.

Devon was at the top of the stairs waiting. “Hey, there! Good to see you.”

Kent held up the bag. “Halloween’s coming… I grabbed a bag of candy… Not for next week… for now.”

“Nice!” Devon waited and turned with Kent into the common area where Shay, Hannah, and Merritt were sitting.

Kent held up the bag again, but changed the subject. “I’m starting to feel like that guy on Seinfeld that was always in Jerry’s apartment…”

“Kramer,” Devon said. “But with candy.”

Merritt looked at Shay who seemed confused. “Don’t worry… it was after my time, too…”

Shay shook her head. “I must say that I have no words fit to describe the TV. I cannot fathom its workings… And news from the opposite side of the world seen as it occurs… I declare it is…”

Merritt looked over at her. “In 1984, live coverage was just becoming normal. It still amazes me how things have turned out.”

Kent reached into the bag and tossed candy to Merritt. “Everything makes more sense with chocolate. Hannah?”

“Yes, please.”

“Shay?”

Kent saw to it that everyone got candy. “Have Tom or Will got any messages with a hint about shifting back?”

Merritt said they hadn’t.

“Well,” Kent said, “I’ve covered all of Shay’s projects, and I can’t say it’s hurt my pocketbook. I’m getting ‘Pay It Forward’ money every day.”

Merritt shook his head. “Electronic banking is another thing that was a hard adjustment for me.”

Shay laughed. “Do what Emma says to do… Play along like you understand!”

Merritt smiled. “True enough.”

Kent looked at Devon. “Has anyone thought about how the IRS is gonna get their slice of the ‘Pay It Forward” money?”

Devon looked at Merritt, eyes wide. “Income tax?”

Hannah shook her head. “We better start saving a third…”
