I got what Hannah calls “the boys” fed—that’s Merritt an’ Devon—then they left to work. They don’t ‘xpect me to cook an’ clean for ‘em, and I don’t do any cleaning’ ‘xcept the dishes I use cooking. They do all the rest of it. I like spending the mornings with them, an’ that just makes fixin’ breakfast seem natural.
Today, when we was eatin’, Hannah sent a Snap saying Merritt had to go out to Long Island this afternoon, so she’d not be tied up in the office. She said it would be fun if I took the train to Manhattan an’ we could meet for coffee.
We sat down an’ first off talked about sharing a’ ‘partment.
“My loft is really small,” she said. “I have a futon couch, my bed and night table, and not much more.”
We figured between the two of us, we’d have everything we needed for two bedrooms, a parlor, and the kitchen. There’s gonna be a built-in counter called a breakfast bar.
We talked ‘bout that a little while, then she said, “Has Devon heard about his Social Security card?”
I tol’ her he hadn’t an’ she said Tom had sent papers with Merritt to get Devon to fill out, plus there was a lot of papers on the computer to do up, then she added, “Will has a friend at New Jersey institute of Technology who promises she’ll help Devon get enrolled in their Engineering program and on a fast track to make use of his 2 year degree.”
I said, “That would be real nice. Devon’s a good man trying his best.”
“He is a good man. I see how he treats you. He listens when you talk… like he cares what you are saying, not just trying to figure out what he’s gonna say next. He seems to be respectful… At least he always is to me.”
“I like how he’s a proper gentleman.”
Hannah nodded. “But he’s definitely not condescending. He’s always willing to help me, but not like he thinks I can’t or that he’s superior.”
“Yeah,” I said, “I know what you mean. He’s thankful, too… …tells Merritt all the time how grateful he is.
We talked on about how nice it was to have good friends like Merritt and Devon.
And each other, of course!
We were ‘bout done with our coffee and out of time ‘fore Hannah had to get back to work, but Hannah seemed to have more on her mind.
“You know, the four of us… we get along better than anyone would expect. We don’t talk about it very much, but I think a lot of it is how we’re connected after the dream. And Devon just happens to fit in with us, but that connection between you, Merritt, and me… It’s so strong…”
I nodded my head. “I know what you mean. It ain’t natural that we’d be so close, even though…”
Hannah looked at me. “Even though what?”
“Well… I guess we both fancy Merritt, but it don’t make me like you less.”
Well, Hannah seemed a little surprised by me saying that. By then, we was out of time for sure.
“Emma, you are so wonderful,” Hannah said. “I couldn’t like you less if I tried. Let’s think about what you said and talk about it again.”
So, that’s how we left it. I guess we’ll find time this weekend to talk about it.
That’s all I wanted to say in this post. I sure do appreciate ever’one who reads them and I love to see what you think about them.
Thanks!
