2024-09-08 “Sunday Picnic” by Emma

Something I learned in 2024 is an expression about there being an elephant in the room, but nobody wants to mention it. Boy, Granny would’ve liked that one, cause my Granpappy would ignore problems like nobody would’ve believed.

Well, me, Merritt, Hannah, and Devon are tiptoeing around a big elephant, an’ I s’pose you can guess what it is. We all know… We just ain’t talking ‘bout it.

What we are talking ‘bout while we’re having this picnic is something Tom is working up.

On Friday, he tol’ me bring a copy of my lease with me. I thought it was something about taxes or addresses, but he wanted to see something else. While I was doing the show, he called Merritt and Hannah and tol’ them come out, ‘cause he knows Merritt and Devon walk me home on Friday’s.

Tom got us all in the green room. “I have a proposition.”

Tom ‘splained that when he bought the department store to make it a theater, he didn’t do nothing with the upstairs, so it’s unfinished. Now, with him trying to improve the special events stage, he has to get inspections, an’ what that NYC is so crowded to start with, the inspector don’t want to be quick about anything.

“He didn’t come right out and say it, but,” Tom said, “he left me thinking that he’d like to see the 2nd floor finished. There’s also a little paragraph in the insurance policy that cites the unfinished space as a hazard and that costs me extra.”

Tom’s got the idea to make the 2nd floor into three 2 bedroom apartments grouped around a common area looking out to the street. “Your lease says you have to pay some penalties. I’ll waive rent here until it’s paid, so you don’t lose any money. Addison agreed to take one of the apartments. I was thinking maybe you could work out taking the other two at the same price you’re paying now.”

That was Friday. Today, we’re talking about it.

“My lease,” Hannah said, “is out, and I’m paying month-to-month. I could move in with you, Emma, if you really want that.”

So, elephant or not, looks like we’re gonna be making some changes in how we live.
