2024-08-12 “Thin Ice” by Merritt

The weekend gave me a lot to think about. Things between Emma and me are obviously important and complicated by our situation. To be sure, I fully agree with her that we need to be sure about our circumstances before thinking about any sort of relationships. I tried to explain that to Addison, but I’m not sure I was clear.

With that in mind, I need to get things worked out at work. My current assignments are okay, but it’s clear there’s an expectation to move on to more actual engineering. That’s weighing on me.

I asked Will if he’d meet me for lunch and he agreed. I wanted to see if he had insight.

We sat down and he asked, “So what’s bothering you most?”

I told him my concerns about the engineering issues. “I feel like I’m walking on thin ice.”

We talked about my gaps and deficits. He was encouraging, then he said something really eye-opening.

“So, make an account for ChatGPT and query it with things like, ‘List ten engineering innovations since 1984.’ Then you can research each of those in turn and go deeper and deeper. You can even ask things like, ‘What materials are commonly used in 2024 for subfloors.’ Then you research the answers to make sure they are right.”

“Back up,” I said. “Let’s start with what ChatGPT is…”

He walked me through it and got to the part about making an account, and I said, “So I just give them my credit card number?”

Will pointed. “Actually, you have a debit card, but the principle is the same. You need to use discretion, though.”

He talked about scams and reputable sites. I knew about Amazon.

Still, it’s all… so different.

“So,” I said, “we just throw our numbers out there and all is good? I don’t even have $50 in my pocket.”

Will laughed. “Merritt, I have $5 that I don’t even know where it came from. I have used cash this year, as far as I recall. And I don’t even have a checkbook.”

We went through it all a second time, then he said, “Just take things slow. I’ll try to screen jobs for you so you have time to catch up. The principles are the same. The names and numbers are different. You got this.”

I hope he’s right about that.
