Addison and Jacob sat in a Brooklyn cafe with Dr. David Gregory, one of the physicists NYC SysCo had hired to study the time-travel phenomenon. She didn’t have too much time, but neither did David.
“Anika picked up the rental car,” he explained, “but I did want to get some notes on your experiences.”
“Well, we told you about our time-shifting experiences,” Jacob said. “I’ll add you to my GoogleDoc with my notes about who shifted to where and when, but that’s more or less a moot point now that the memories are essentially merged.”
“It was really quite an experience,” Addison said. “One moment you are here… your consciousness that is… then a blink later, you’re 144 years in the past…”
David smiled. “And in your case, you’re a man…”
Addison nodded. “We still have… issues with the merging memories… The 1800s Addison… has negative… reactions to Jacob and my relationship.”
David shook his head. “Mind boggling…”
Jacob nodded. “So, FaceTime with Emma in Virginia beach didn’t convince you?”
David shrugged. “I’m inclined to be convinced… we just… I dunno… we’re hoping for something we can call empirical evidence that this is really happening.”
Just then, David pointed and said, “Anika is here… I’ll see you guys later…”
As David stood up, Addison had a flash of an idea. “Hey… quick thought… I’ll go fast…”
David waved at Anika. “What’s your thought?”
“The Addison that lives up in Sag Harbor… Back in 1984, she started a journal. Well, it… appeared on a shelf back a few months ago… in 2024… And, everyday, the contents of the journal increases. So, whenever she writes in her journal… now in 1985… it shows up… on the pages…”
“What?” David waved at Anika again.
Jacob smiled. “That’s pretty empirical…”
“Woo… a journal?”
Jacob nodded. “I think you two are heading to the wrong beach.”
David nodded. “Well, if you will… ask if we can… something… just… this is… this is… yeah, we need to… see that journal.”
Addison nodded as David pulled on his coat. “I’ll make a call… Have a good trip.”
