2024-12-17 “Meanings” for Kent (born 1998)

Kent could hardly believe it. By signing his name to a piece of paper he had instantly become extremely wealthy. Not Shay Ryder wealthy, but beyond his wildest imagination.

“Now remember,” one of the lawyers said, “per the Dissolution and Termination terms, when the last of the founding members passes away, all assets are divided equally among the surviving members of the LLC. You’ll be free to create a new LLC, or retain the asset as personal property.”

The other lawyer said, “So, that’s it. Traveling Friends, LLC now has 8 members. We’re done here.”

Old Kent then stood up. “The brokerage agency handles everything. We just sit back and take our quarterly draws.”

Kent looked at old Kent as the lawyers left. “So we just sit back and money shows up every 3 months?”

Old Merritt answered. “That’s it.”

Old Hannah then said, “And before we get ours, 10% goes to the foundation. That’s a different entity, and there’s a board that runs it. They manage the money, its investments, and what charities get how much.”

“We tried to,” old Kent added, “make it self-sufficient and enduring… I think it works as intended.”

Merritt then said, “But… why? Surely all you went through wasn’t just so you can make us wealthy and give money to charity. Having your past memories ripped apart every day… And in the days to come… by the memories we haven’t made yet… You’re going to have to go through this as long as we live. Everyday we live in 2025 will become a new memory for you in 1985. And for every day after that… It has to be about something bigger than Traveling Friends, LLC… What is all this time shifting about? What does it all mean?”

Three of the old versions looked at old Emma, so she answered. “Back in 1984, two weeks before Christmas the four of us had three weeks off, so we went to the Wise Inn in a nearby town. Well, it was Dec. 21 when a man by the name of Paul Charm showed up out of nowhere. Literally…”

Hannah laughed. “Oh no…”

“He told us he had just come from 2024 after explaining everything to you. It’s really surreal,” Emma said, “that he told us about our memories merging before it had really got going. I mean, what you do tomorrow will come to us on Dec 16, 1984… Once you meet with him, our memory of meeting him on Dec 21 will change…”

Old Hannah laughed. “Wonder if the picture will change, too?”

Old Kent shook his head. “We’ll show you the picture when we get back… We have an album of our Bluewater days…”

Old Merritt then said, “That’s why we’ve been waiting to find you and do this. We figured all this would be more sensible after hearing what he tells you. I’m not saying I wish you hadn’t found us… this has been amazing and I think it worked out well.”

Emma then said. “According to what he told us, within a few more weeks, all the pasts of all three groups will be organized in the shared memory banks. Essentially, us back in 1984 will be the same as us in 1880 and 2024.”

“But in different clothes…” Old Kent said with a laugh.

“And,” Merritt added, “the time shifting… that was primarily to get the memories connected, so he will say.”

Old Emma nodded. “I’d like to ask that you let him give you all the details. It was 40 years ago, and some of the fine points are lost to… time.”

Kent nodded. “That seems reasonable.”

Old Kent then added. “But the gist of it is… You four… on the front end of time…You’ll be using the memories of us from back in 1984 as it happens and us back in 1880 to… to…”

Old Hannah finished the thought. “Set things right in time that help make things better for humanity.”

Old Merritt looked at Merritt. “And… yeah… having our past memories changing over these last couple of weeks… a little stressful… But, on the other side of the coin, knowing about iPhones in 1984… created certain… advantages…”

Kent looked at the balance sheet for the LLC and decided old Merritt was right.
