2024-12-16 “Motors” for Kent (born 1998)

It might not have been the best day for boating, but Kent didn’t mind. At all. And he was surprised by the proud feeling he had when Hannah and old Hannah took over the helm.

He and old Kent backed into the cockpit to enjoy the ride. “Twin diesels… 800 HP each… Burn about 12 gallons an hour, but… well… you get it…”

Kent nodded. It was a lot of power and it moved the 45 foot Cabo Express fishing yacht at a cruising speed of 25 knots.

Old Kent went on. “Two staterooms… You can sleep four in the salon… sofas… We don’t sleep out to sea much, though…”

Kent nodded as Hannah powered up the MANs to cruising speed.

“First year we had it,” old Kent added, “we ran it up the coast to visit Addison.”

Kent looked at him. “I was gonna ask about her…”

“When Bluewater shut down, she took her winnings and went north… You know she never shifted, but she tapped into the memory banks all the same. Fact is, I’d wager that iPhone you have is partly because of her…”

Kent furrowed his brow and old Kent went on. “Around 1990, a fellow came to Bluewater for protection. He was going to China. He mentioned he was associated with Steve Jobs. To hear her tell it, Addison about blew a gasket. She drug the man off and laid out every memory she had about the future… Here’s that paradox… by then, it was all the stuff she’d learned between Halloween and now and everything Emma had told her about… Well, the fella started taking notes and shaking his head. We forgot his name but it wasn’t Wozniak or Wayne… But, maybe that little talk… sped things up some?”

Kent smiled. “Butterfly effect… No telling where the ripples ended.”

“You were saying you went to see her?”

Old Kent nodded. “She has a house up in Sag Harbor, NY. The Hamptons, you know… She never married. Truth is, she always seemed like something was missing…”

“So, Jacob Brown never came along?”

Old Kent shook his head. “Me and Merritt were talking about that around Thanksgiving. No Jacob… No Devon… No Shay… David and Carol Ryder… our versions… no kids…”
