2024-12-02 “Big Changes Ahead” for Liza (born 2003)

Liza took a long look around her apartment. It had served her well while she took classes at Rowan University. She had spent many long nights and weekends there. Alone.

Things were changing for Liza. All of her coursework requiring on-campus meetings was done, apart from her Senior Project, which would meet once every two weeks. Otherwise, her last semester would be fulfilled with her internship at NYC SysCo.

Everything in her life began changing when happenstance put her waiting on an elevator with Devon Collier. She had initially been suspicious, but he had convinced her with genuine kindness that him not knowing her was a matter of circumstance, not some plot to do her harm.

He had invited her into his circle of friends, some connected because they were time-travelers—Liza’s mind still balked at that concept. A few others she had met because of their connections to Habitat Housing.

Connected to both was Shay Ryder. Shay’s kindness had quickly evolved into what Liza considered real camaraderie and budding friendship. They had grown close quickly, in part because they both shared a lot of social awkwardness.

Liza had stayed with Shay at her West Village townhome a few nights starting on Thanksgiving. Shay invited her to move in. It was a 4 bedroom, 5 bath home, and Shay lived in it alone.

On Saturday, Liza had agreed. Her 1.5 hour commute to work would be all but nullified. And proximity to a new friend was more exciting than anything Liza could recall.

Another possible change growing indirectly out of the chance elevator encounter was the hints of a romantic relationship. If it happened, it would be Liza’s first.

While the proximity of NYU to Shay’s house wasn’t a factor in her deciding to move in, it was a delightful additional… amenity, for it was at NYU that Caleb Hastings would be starting his graduate work in January.
