NYC SysCo closed for Thanksgiving week after a half-day on Tuesday. Since her parents had relocated to Seattle when she started college, that left Liza with 5 and ½ days to do nothing; money was tight for the family.
But not too tight for her to stop in for coffee. While she waited in line, her thoughts replayed the recent events at the office.
Fifteen minutes earlier, she was getting her things together when she got a Snap from Devon: “Where are you?”
She told him and he found her, then he explained that there was a big Thanksgiving thing planned in West Village. “You should come. Meet everyone…”
“Everyone?”
Devon explained about the apartments and Habitat Housing. “You already met Kent… He’ll be there… And I talked Shay’s bodyguards into all coming, too.”
Liza let Devon convince her to go, and he seemed pleased. “I’ll text you the address… See you then. And… Snap me just to stay in touch… Or if you need something…”
“Snap you?”
Merritt was at the elevator and he called back to Devon. “Elevator… you want me to hold it our you going to be a while.”
Devon looked at Liza. “Okay… stay in touch… See you soon…”
He hurried to catch up with Merritt. Liza stared after him, more or less overwhelmed.
She moved one place closer to the barista. She thought about what had happened since running into Devon the day before.
She told herself once more that he must be up to something. What it was, she wasn’t sure.
Then, it crossed her mind that he knew about her sabotaging the pet store markups. She thought that he must be planning something and she would bear the brunt of whatever it was.
The adage of “know thy enemy” came to her mind. She knew Merritt and Hannah had Instagrams and figured Devon would be mentioned there. She decided to dive in deep to learn whatever she could. The claims about the Time Traveler business were interesting, and this would give her a chance to look into that as well.
She’d get her coffee and start immediately.
