2024-11-23 “Not Expected” by Hannah (born 2002)

This is not how I thought I’d be spending my Saturday. I got a call from David Stewart at 9 a.m. today saying he was in the office working on the pet store (that I’ve come to refer to as the little shop of horrors). He said he was looking at my markups and that there was a big problem.

“Hannah, I hate to ask, but could you come in? I looked at them yesterday and everything seemed fine. Now, a lot of the numbers are ridiculous.”

So, here I am utterly confused. It looks like something happened yesterday after lunch. Oh… I was NOT HERE at that time.

The suspicious part of my brain is running amok. Consider this: David (he’s about 28-30) found out about Merritt and me breaking up. And that Devon and me was more or less just a joke. And… Well, he is doing what he can on the project without my markups in his office. A little while ago, he said when I got done, he’d make it up to me by buying lunch at a cafe across the street. Reasonable. But…

Moving on…

Devon and I had a good time at the ballet. It was a nice way to end our pretend relationship (which is what we decided it was). We got to the top of the stairs back at the apartments and he started to turn away.

I had an impulse. “Hey…”

He stopped and I took his hand. “Last date… last goodnight kiss?”

He smiled. It was a sweet, gentle, brief kiss.

“Nice way to end this…” Devon said. “And… seriously, I have no regrets.”

“Neither do I,” I said.

So, it’s over. Devon and I are officially single.

And that nudges the suspicious part of my brain back to David Stewart. I just don’t know.
