2024-11-20 “Interesting Situation” for Tia (born 2000)

Tia reviewed the sprint list for the day, then looked over what needed to be done by Friday. As far as she could tell, everything was on track.

She changed apps on her iPad to find a Snapchat message from Shay Ryder thanking her for her recent work and also saying that she had enjoyed talking at the spaghetti dinner Emma had made for everyone on Monday.

Tia thought Shay was a good organizer, and she seemed nice, but there was just an awkward edge to her personal interactions. In any case, she had Shay to thank for immersing her into the very interesting group of… time travelers. Tia’s thoughts still balked at the idea.

She had been party to, on Monday night, an interesting discussion (if it were all true). Jacob, the Apple Genius, had mentioned that the versions that had shifted into 1984 could still be alive in 2024 and that it would be interesting to meet them, if they could be found.

Emma, the girl born in 1861 then asked if the others thought all the versions were “instances” of each other like different instances of a program or game. Ignoring the fact that the idea of computer instances came from a girl who’d only known what an iPhone was since July was fascinating.

Jacob responded. “So, you're saying each of us is like an instance of the same program running different jobs. Like… running terminal in two different windows and firing off instances  of… say ‘traceroute’… Exact copies of the same program doing different things at the same time… The output is different because the query is different, but the programs are exactly the same.”

Everyone agreed that it was an interesting question. Tia found it amazing to hear Hannah and Merritt talking about how they felt when they were around the corresponding versions of each other. She thought it was especially interesting, given that Merritt and Hannah had broken up.

But, the idea of exact duplicates located at different places in time… possibly on the same timeline was very intriguing.
