I woke up with a smile on my face today… Also, there’s something weird I want to get to, but that will come after!
Friday night, I broke up with Merritt. He was right. Nothing was wrong between us. Just something wasn’t right. Fortunately, we behaved well over our weeks together so working beside him won’t be strange (unlike what I’ll tell at the end!).
Last night, after working for Habitat Housing and Merritt’s sprinting away back to Emma (Yes, I am happy for her, and YES, I feel guilty for interfering!) Devon made me an offer I just couldn’t refuse… I shall quote!
“How about this? You and me… we’re on the relationship rebound, right?… So… we finish the outlets and switches, paint that back room from last week, then go back to our apartments…… We clean up. I take you out for Italian. I make you laugh. You make me smile. We go back to the common room… Sit on a sofa. We watch the news for a while… You lean over onto my shoulder… we cuddle a bit… then… you know… swap spit and cuddle more. Then we decide we’re dating and see what happens?”
Indeed, we finished the room. Indeed we laughed and smiled. And, yes, more for the sake of keeping to the plan, we cuddled and indeed “swapped a little spit.” Honestly, in total, it was pleasant. Regarding his “two weeks or forever” prediction, I’m not ready to say which!
Now, the strange thing… I went out into the common room at like 6 a.m. to “borrow” some coffee from the kitchenette. Emma and Merritt were on the corner couch at that end of the room. She was lying with her head in his lap holding his hand; I have to say it was darling and sweet—I’d say an order of magnitude more so than when I saw her with Devon.
They both had their laptops but they weren’t looking at them. In fact, they seemed… lost. If I didn’t know them better, I’d say they were stoned. Like a couple notches this side of catatonic.
“You guys okay?”
Merritt blinked at me and sort of nodded his head.
“Yeah,” he said. “Just hanging out.”
“You seem a little off… both of you… Have you time-shifted again?”
Merritt shook his head, but didn’t say anything.
Emma answered. “I’m fine, really. I'm just feeling a bit distracted.”
PLOT TWIST: Emma does not talk like that!
Merritt said, “Yeah… I feel a little tired. I guess we got up too early.”
Merritt’s laptop had GoogleMaps pulled up. The route from Atlanta to Memphis. Emma’s had weather.com showing the Memphis weather.
I pointed at the screen. “You two planning a trip?”
Merritt looked at his laptop and seemed surprised. “Uh… No… we were just messing around. Thinking about the other versions of us…”
Let me tell you this: something was off, and I will be keeping my eye on them. If they time-travel isn’t involved, then something else is going on.
I mean, finding your heart’s desire is one thing… I suppose it could account for the stupor they seem to be in… but…
I don’t know… My gut says it’s not that.
