2024-11-15 “More Than Teammates” for Merritt (born 1960)

It was Friday, so after working, Merritt and Hannah met at the office, then went to dinner near their apartments in Brooklyn. They chatted about the day and their plan to finish up the Humanity Housing project the next day.

When the waiter stopped by to refill iced tea glasses, the conversation lulled. Merritt’s eyes met Hannah’s and he smiled as a nice moment was shared in the midst of their gazes.

Then Hannah sighed. “We’re good together, right?”

Merritt’s thought raced as he replayed the many times she had asked that and the conclusion he had come to as to why. He looked down at his plate.

“Merritt?”

“Hannah, there is nothing wrong between us. I’m 100% sure about that. Everything is good.”

Hannah looked at him, apparently detecting the unspoken word that would connect to his next thought.

“But?”

“Something’s missing for you. Somehow, you need more… I think you ask me that question so that I can somehow convince you that being good together is enough. Nothing’s wrong between us, but I think you feel like something’s missing. Something about this isn’t enough.”

Hannah’s eyes lowered as silence settled over their table. Merritt wished she would say he was wrong, but he knew she wouldn’t. And she didn’t.

Finally, Hannah looked up. “I don’t know what’s missing, though. Everything is good.”

“But not good enough…”

Hannah nodded and let another long silence pass before saying more. “So, now what?”

Merritt shook his head. “You know… You’ve said it a dozen times… We go forward until we realize that ‘forever’ isn’t in the works for us…”

Hannah nodded again. “…then we hope what’s left is good enough that we…”

Merritt smiled. “We are a good team. We still will be… But you deserve someone who’s more than just a good teammate.”

Hannah’s expression softened and a peaceful smile drew itself onto her face. “So do you, Merritt.”
