1984-07-06 “Calls To Make” for Merritt (born 1960)

Merritt and Emma decided to wait in Memphis a few days to see if anything came up to make clear what they were supposed to figure out that they were supposed to do. They awoke, Friday, July 6 having learned nothing new.

They decided to go to Overton Park, walk around, and just pass some time. The talked about what they were seeing, shared things about 1880 and 2024 that they had experienced over the last months, and then about their lives from before 1984.

They were far from out of things to talk about when a lull emerged in the conversation. They walked in silence, just holding hands and sharing the moment. Finally, Merritt broke the silence.

“Emma, did you mean it when you said ‘First, last only, and forever?’”

Emma looked down and nodded. “Did you mean it when you said that sounded perfect.”

Merritt squeezed her hand. “Yes.”

They walked along a little while longer, then Merritt said, “Tomorrow, I need to run an errand, then… I hope you and I will have some phone calls to make.”

Merritt wouldn’t say any more about that, guiding the conversation instead to them going to New York and the job he had waiting for him. He was supposed to report on July 16.
