2024-10-18 “Next Shift” by Emma (born 1861)

I got a lot t’ tell, so I’ll try an’ go fast.

First off, I really like the new ‘partments and being so close to work. But, I like to get out an’ walk ‘round some, so I’m going to a store an’ gettin’ some creamers.

I s’pose you read what Merritt tol’ about the birthdays. He showed us all, since he’s so worked up about it. I’m worried for him, ‘cause he don’t like how it doesn’t add up. He said it felt “arbitrary” to just pick a second outta nowhere.

Hannah said it was two particular seconds… more like instants, Jacob said… but nobody can figure what equinoxes have to do with time-shiftin’. Merritt said he was resigned to just not understanding, but me an’ Hannah think he just said that.

Now, that brings me to the next thing. Tom made a regular texting group for all ten o’ us for talking ‘bout the time travel. Tom an’ Will got them messages like what they got before the last shift. This time, it said Hannah and Shay was gonna shift. Tonight.

Nick said he’d go to the house what that’s getting a new roof and cover for Shay. Shay said she’d come to the ‘partments so as the other Shay wouldn’t be alone in her house.

Now, ‘bout Merritt being worked up… He wanted to know why those two, and why do we have to shift at all.

“Couldn’t they just… influence the ones that are in the right timeline and skip over the shifting?”

Now, I thought Nick made a good answer, but I can’t say his words ‘xactly. Getting shifted makes the ones what got shifted really motivated to do somethin’. If they’d ’av just gone up to the Shay and Nick in 1880 an’ said “Go to Grand Junction” why woulda those two listened? Nick thought the shiftin’ made the ones what shifted pay attention and follow through on the plan.

Then I said, “Maybe I ain’t shifting this time so as to help Shay with 2024.”

Then this Shay asked about it, an I tol’ her to wear big panties—Hannah said “granny panties”—a skirt, a camisole, an’ a blouse so as the other Shay wouldn’t be confused by the clothes again.
