2024-10-17 “A Thing In Common” by Hannah (born 2002)

Since Emma has Thursday’s off, we picked today to meet with Vicki at the bank. She, Devon, Merritt and I met at a coffee shop nearby, then went in together. Vicki showed us to a small conference room and got things started with forms that had to be signed and dated.

Emma’s experiences in 2024 only amount to a few months, so the forms were not as trivial to her as to the others of us.

“It’s askin’ for by dob. What’s a dob?”

I looked where she was pointing. “That’s initials. D, O, B… date of birth… your birthday…”

Emma forced a smile, but offered a little complaint. “They coulda just put ‘birthday’… So, March 22…”

I was shocked and stared at her. “March 20?”

Emma nodded. “Yeah… why?”

“Same as me!”

Emma lit up. “Oh, boy, that’s somthin’! How come we never brought this up?”

“What a crazy coincidence,” I said, and looked at Merritt for his take on it.

He was just shaking his head, then said, “Why have we never talked about birthday’s before?”

I shrugged. “I guess because they were already in the past?”

His look was strange and I felt like I was missing something. “Merritt, what is it?”

Devon had leaned over to Merritt’s form, and answered for him. “His birthday is March 20, too.”

I thought Devon was making a joke, so I pulled Merritt’s paper to me. “Are you kidding? All three of us? Devon? You, too?”

He shook his head. “My birthday was September 23.”

Merritt looked at Devon. “Send a text to that group Tom made… not the Snapchat… real text messages.”

“For what? Because my birthday is coming up?”

Merritt shook his head. “What’s the chance the three of us have the same birthday? Tell them what we just realized and ask everyone when their birthday is.”

A few minutes later, we had replies:

Shay: March 20
Jacob: September 22
Kent: September 23
Addison: September 23

We had no idea what to make of the answers. We finished setting up our “Young Professionals” investment accounts, but our minds were distracted by our new findings. And by the stream of chatter in the group text message thread.
