2024-10-14 “Must Be Something” by Merritt (born 1960)

When I got home to the new apartment tonight, I was surprised to find Kent and Addison standing in the common area and looking out the window. We exchanged greetings, then Addison’s phone rang.

“Oh… It’s my mom. I”ll be right back.” She went inside her apartment to take the call.

“So,” I said to Kent, “what brings you by?”

He smiled. “Addidson did that thing girls do to ask you out on a first date.”

“That thing?”

“Yeah… you know… ‘Can you do me a favor? I’ll buy you dinner…’”

I smiled. “I see.”

“Hey…” Kent’s face turned a little serious. “I wanna tell you something I thought of.”

“Okay…”

“It goes along with what we were saying about ‘why us?’… Merritt, do you believe in… let’s say a higher power?”

“You mean God? Yeah I do?”

Kent nodded. “I read a thing. Greek myths and philosophy. Bear with me. So all their gods… Their philosophers kept asking where they came from. By and by they thought there had to be, like one of them that was first. Apollo. Now, that name, the book said, comes from 2 words. Apo and polos. It means ‘from the many’ saying something had to be highest. It was fancier in the book.”

“Where are you going with this?”

Kent nodded. “Yeah, so this agency or institution or whatever… it’s got power over us… to make us inclined to things and shift us through time… But, it can’t control a lynch mob. Or make a man think about elements…”

“Right…”

“It’s not God.” Kent nodded. “It’s not all-powerful or anything close… It can only control… influence… certain people.”

I nodded. “Yeah, that’s what seems to be true.”

“Only certain people… It goes back to what Emma said… we all must have something in common… something we’ve not noticed. Yet.”

“Agreed.”

“Now… if we find it, will there be others that have it in common with us, too?”

“Oh, wow…”

“Yeah,” Kent replied. “If so… Well, are they time travelers, too? Something to think about, eh?”

I agreed.
