Kent Marlon looked at the group that had earlier arrived at the Habitat Housing project site. Shay had told him they were engineers, but they didn’t look like dorks or nerds. Especially the girl.
Kent had fast-tracked to become an electrician, and at the age of 26, he had opened his own company. It did mostly residential new construction. Shay had cold-called him and convinced him to donate a day here and there to help income challenged people get or fix up housing.
Shay was gorgeous, but Kent never got a good vibe from her. She seemed to be something… he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He’d wrangled a coffee date from her one afternoon after they had met to plan a job. Meh.
Hannah, the girl engineer, was beautiful, too. When they had arrived, she seemed pretty friendly with Merritt, but that chilled very quickly.
At the ripe old age of 26, Kent was open to the idea of finding a woman to start a life with. He had his company going. Things on that front were good. His life was at a place where there was room for more.
He figured his brain could make space to consider Hannah as a possibility. Plus, she knew how to wire outlets and switches. That was a big plus, in his book.
Kent thought he’d get to Hannah through a sidedoor, so he approached Devon. “You guys gonna be doing more of this?”
Devon nodded. “Yeah, it’s a good project. We’re in.”
“Let me get your number,” Kent said. “I get pulled into jobs regularly, and volunteers who know white wires from black are valuable assets, if you know what I mean.”
“Sure.” Devon gave him his number. “Let me give you Merritt and Hannah’s, too.”
Kent was pleased. Hannah walked up at that moment.
“What’s up?”
Devon explained, and Hannah smiled. “Yeah, I’d rather do wires than pipes! Call us…”
Devon added. “Saturdays… jobs and all that…”
Kent nodded. “Of course.”
