2024-08-17 “A Little Luck” by Hannah

I couldn’t believe my luck today. If you don’t believe in luck, call it, karma, fate, blessing, divine intervention, random chance…

It has been on my mind now for some time that Merritt Gray might be the kind of man I’d like to make long-term plans with. Like, really long-term.

But nagging my plan is the idea that he and his neighbor, Emma Knox, are more than just neighbors, despite him saying they aren’t. I went to his apartment where she was waiting with dinner a while back. There was definitely a feeling. Something…

Back to today… I went to work on a Saturday partly because I had nothing better to do, partly because I wanted to look good to the boss, and in a small way to actually get a few things organized in my work area.

Will Robertson’s assistant, Cliff Dawson was there digging around in his email. When he saw me he motioned me over.

“You feel like taking on an initial site survey?”

“Sure… what’s up?”

To my utter amazement, the client was the Brooklyn theater where Emma works. I remembered the name from that awkward night at Merritt’s apartment.

Now, what better way to find out what’s going on than to check things from the other side? I thought Emma was charming, to start with, so if it turns out that Merritt and she are really just neighbors, I might end up with a boyfriend and a girl friend at the same time.

Since the theater is open on Saturday, I told Cliff not only would I take the assignment, but that I’d go over and introduce myself right away.

Naturally, I stopped for coffee first!
