2024-08-06 “The Show Goes On” by Emma

That title’s s’posed to be like what Addison says about theater. “The show must go on!” It means you jus’ keep going, even if there’s problems.

It fits me and Merritt in a lot of ways.

I’m in the dressing room at work, getting ready for today’s show. The Theater’s closed on Sunday and Thursday. I work matinee on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. That means the show is in the daytime, ‘case you didn’t know. I sure didn’t know what a matinee is. So, I work into the night on Tuesday and Friday, and Merritt comes an’ walks me home for safety.

Well, back to me and Merritt and our problems…

Merritt bung his boss to the ‘partment last night ‘cause o’ what happened at hsi work yesterday. So, the short of it is that now Will knows me an’ Merritt come from the past.

Will’s older an’ seems wise. He says we ought to be careful ‘bout telling folk we’re from the past. So, I tol’ him I needed to let my boss know, too.”

Will took on a real thoughtful look, then said, “How about you have her here Thursday night, and I’ll come, too. I can help her understand this is something beyond normal and that you aren’t crazy. Me, being in class with Merritt has me convinced. She… Well, I don’t suppose she’s lived in Mississippi in 1880, so she won’t be have reason to believe you.”

“So,” Merritt said, “you’ll come try to help her believe us?”

Will said he would, and so that’s the plan. I’ll feel better for Addison knowing. Keeping a secret like this makes me nervous.
