2024-07-14 “Looking To NYC” by Merritt
The festival is over at Miami Beach, so Jenn, Emma and I are just taking it easy. We decided to relax on Monday and travel on Tuesday.
Jenn and I took a walk on the beach while Emma was, as she says, “working on her words.” We had a lot to work out before we could unpack in New York.
“Except for furniture.”
Jenn nodded. “And we ordered that from Amazon last night.”
I nodded. “I called the building manager and he said it was routine to let Amazon deliver into apartments. Someone would let them in. We’ll have to unbox it and all that.”
Jenn smiled. “Well, back in 1997… a few weeks ago from my point of view… I bought plenty of flat furniture and had to assemble it. I guess that will come in handy.”
I shook my head and stared at the ground. “Jenn all this… It’s nearly unthinkable… We bought beds and a sleeper sofa from a place that doesn’t really exist with money from my debit card that I’ve never seen, and they are going to deliver it to our new home within 48 hours where the manager is waiting for them… It’s…”
Jenn was looking past me off into the distance. “It’s surreal. I’m barely comfortable with text messages. I never heard of the Internet in 1997… now, it seems our lives are bound to it.”
I nodded.
We walked along without talking for a little while, then I thought of something to say. “You know, Emma’s got a good approach…”
“What’s that? Be cute and make people like her?”
“Well, that, yes… but,” I replied, “play along like you understand and work it out as you go. Adjust. Adapt.”
Jenn nodded. “She’s far from dumb. Being educated and being intelligent are not the same.”
“Well,” I replied, “neither of us are dumb, either.”
We walked a few more steps in silence, then Jenn summed everything up. “We’ll stick together and figure all this out. We’ll hope for the best and keep going.”
